Getting closer…

…to having stuff done for the babies’ arrival (whenever that may be)!

Friday night was Trick or Treat in our neighborhood, so we spent most of the evening handing out candy and chatting with our neighbors.  Eric always says he could do without handing out candy (he grew up in the country with no place to go for trick or treating), but I like to do it because it’s the one night a year I know I’ll chat with the people who live near us.  And I like that!

Saturday was a pretty boring day.  Neither of us seemed to have any gumption to accomplish much.  So I did a few chores and later we ran over to the Amish furniture store to look at chairs.  We didn’t buy anything, but that is the only remaining component of the nursery that is still totally undecided. I think it would be a good idea to have some sort of chair in the nursery, but any chair that fits seems too small to be used effectively for nursing.  So we’re still working on that!

Sunday was our busy day.  After church and dinner, my parents came up to bring us the dresser my dad built for the nursery.  Isn’t it fabulous?!?

He, of course, pointed out “all” the flaws, but I think it looks great.  And he matched its finish to the cribs almost perfectly!  Then my mom put shelf paper in the drawers, so now all the baby laundry I’ve done over the last few days can actually be put away!  I’m very excited to see it all come together so well.

While they were here, Karen brought Jason over for a visit, too.  So we got to play with him until he was in desperate need of a nap (which is when they left)!  My parents stayed for a while longer, and in the evening, we went to small group. And that was our weekend!

As for today, I have a lot of tidying up to do (kitchen, putting away piles of baby stuff, doing more laundry for the clothes my mom brought up for us, etc.).  And I MUST go grocery shopping.  I put it off all weekend so I didn’t have to fight the crowds, but we are in dire need of many, many things now.  So I will make my list and head out today.  And all of that should keep me pretty busy today!

I think that’s all I’ve got for now…Happy Monday!

  1. the dresser looks great, I am still in need of a chair too and then we are pretty much done.  I am sure there will be things we need which we won’t know about until we need them but for the most part we are ready to go!

IKEA here have a  few good rocking chairs – not sure about there though 😉

Love the nursery, I am just finishing some pics and when I get the curtains my mother in law is making I will post some pics 😉

  2. Awesome dresser! You are so fortunate to have a furniture-building father! No IKEA for you  (that’s what we looked at this weekend).

Brit and I are looking at nursing chairs too, and while space isn’t our pressing issue, we have decided that since we (I) will be spending so much time in it, we’re going to make a comfy chair a priority. Good luck finding one you like!

  3. @shannahhogue – You can also sit up in your bed and do this, but for me that wasn’t as comfortable as a chair.  And it made me grumpy that I wasn’t SLEEPING in the bed I was sitting in.

  4. @gsowell – This was precisely the dilemma I have been trying to figure out.  Right now the only seat in the house that meets all of those criteria is our couch (and it won’t fit in the nursery!).  Thanks for the input!

  5. Some chair advice here:  Nursing twins is an ordeal in the middle of the night.  Here is what worked for us.  When they were little bitty and still getting the hang of nursing, I nursed them one at a time.  When they got better at it, I did them both at the same time (which cut the time we had to be out of bed in half).  The only way to do two at once is sitting up in a chair.  I put their heads in the “business position” and tucked their feet back along my sides, under my arms.   Here’s where the chair part comes in.  We had two rocking chairs, and one was MUCH better than the other for this.  The good one was wide enough for me and the nursing pillow to slide between the arm rests, and the arms were low enough that they didn’t bother the babies’ stretched out legs on each side.  Also, we did not have a footrest, but I soon began dragging a stool in to prop my legs a little higher while they ate.

So if I had it to do over again, I’d take my Boppy to the furniture store, select a comfortable glider-rocker with a matching footstool, making sure that the arms of the chair fit me + pillow + imaginary babies.  Think about holding them level on the pillow at “eating” level.

  6. Beautiful dresser!  Your dad is a talented guy!!

A chair in the nursery for midnight feedings (and 2AM, 3AM, etc.) is a wonderful thing.  Make sure whatever you end up getting is cushy in case you get a long nurser like Kayla was!!
